Observation Report

The Observation’s Purpose
1.      To know the learning activities (the beginning, main, and the end of activities)
2.      To know what the learning media that used
3.      To know the source of learning
4.      To know the approach, method, and the model of learning activities
5.      To know the problem during learning activities
The Result’s Observation
1.      The representation of school profile, class, and home room teacher.
Kanisius Gayam I elementary school is located at Jalan Ki Mangunsarkoro, No. 80, Yogyakarta. This school is located in the center of Yogyakarta only about five minutes from city hall. This school included in Kanisius Foundation with Peter Kanisius as the patron saint. There are six classrooms in this class which are grade one until grade six. Each grade consist about twenty six students. The yard of this school there are many trees so the atmosphere is cool. The headmaster of this school is Elisabeth Listriyani. This school has one library, computer room, dance room, activities room, student health center, and counseling room. There are fifteen teachers in this school. The class that we observed was grade five. The home room teacher of grade five is Mrs. Margareta Novida. This class consist of twenty six students. To decrease the noise so Mrs. Novi arranged the seats . Each boy sit with the girl and once a month Mrs. Novi will rearrange the seat.

2.      The Learning Activities (The Beginning, Main, and The End of Activities)
a.      The beginning activities
The learning activities was started by pray together and then greeting. The aperseption was remebered the previous material that the students have learned. The material was about the circumference of square and rectangle. Mrs. Novi gave some questions to students to make them remember the previous material. Mrs. Novi used a papper that shaped square and rectangle.
Mrs. Novi explain the things that will be learned that day. That day they learned about trapezoid and triangle. This is the orientation of learning activities.

b.      The main activities
The main activities started when Mrs. Novi wrote notes about the kinds of trapezoid and triangle on the blackboard. She also wrote the formula of  area and circumference of trapezoid and triangle. She asked the students to wrote down the notes on their note book. Then, Mrs. Novi explain about the materials that just have been written. She also gave some examples about trapezoid and triangle area and circumference. Mrs. Novi gave the students opportunity to answer the question together. After the explanation Mrs. Novi asked if there were some students who didn’t understand about the materials. After all the students understand Mrs. Novi gave some questions to measure the depth of the students knowledge about the area and circumference of trapezoid and triangle. Mrs. Novi gave some questions from the book and the other questions dictioned by Mrs. Novi. The students answer the questions that given by Mrs. Novi individualy.
After all the students finished their work, some students asked to came in front of the class to wrote down their work on the blackboard. Mrs. Novi discuss the answer with the students.

c.       The ending activities
Mrs. Novi concluded the outcome of the lerning activities. As the confrimation she emphasized the concept of area and circumference of trapezoid and triangle. Mrs. Novi gave some questions for students homework. She gave the question from the book. To end the learning activities they pray together and gave greeting to Mrs. Novi.

3.      Learning Media
Learning media that teacher used was some papers that shaped in form of square, rectangle, trapezoid, and triangle. It helped the students to understand the concept of circumference.

4.      Learning Sources
The learning sources of the learning activity were the Math book from Kanisius foundation and BSE that published by Erlangga. Mrs. Novi used Erlangga’s book as the reference to gave each the student additional questions.
5.      Approach, Methods, and Model of the learning activities
The approach of the learning activity was teacher center learning. In the learning activity, the teacher more active than the student. The methods of the learning activity were speech and questions answers. The teacher gave speech when she explain the material about area and circumference of trapezoid and triangle. The questions answers happened when teacher gave students opportunity to answer the questions that she gave about area and circumference of trapezoid and triangle. We couldn’t see the model of learning during the observation.

6.      The Problems of Learning
When we observed the class, we found some problems that disturbed the learning activity. The first thing was the students often talked the their friends when the teacher asked them to write down some notes on their note book. The students often wrong when they wrote the unit of area and circumference. They often wrote centimeter square for circumference and wrote centimeter without square for area. The third problem was the students often made some mistakes when they did the questions about the circumference of a shape like square, rectangle, triangle, trapezoid, and the combination of two or more shapes. They got confused if they found one side that didn’t have any number and unit.


Discussion of the observation
1.      General feedback for the learning process
After observed the class, we found some things that need some feedback. The first thing is we can’t see the motivation activity in the learning process. The motivation activity should be show after orientation in the learning process, but after the teacher gave orientation the teacher immediately start the main activity. The second thing is we can’t see reflection activity. Reflection activity is used to asked students feeling after learning process. But in the class the end of learning activity didn’t show reflection activity. The third thing is there is no evaluation activity. The teacher should give the students some questions to know if they already understand about the materials. This evaluation activity is used to give score for their assignment. The fourth thing is we couldn’t see the model of learning in the learning activity. The next thing is we appreciate the teacher because she let the students follow the process of concept explanation about circumference and area. The students give participation in the process of question answer. The next thing is the teacher had no doubt to admonish some students who noisy didn’t listen the teacher during the learning activity. She called the students’ name if they talk too much. She also gave some questions to those who didn’t listen to her. The last thing is the students looked enthusistic because the teacher involve the students in the learning process. This thing made math  didn’t horrible.

2.      The tings that we can learn as a teacher
a.       Rigia Tirza H
After the observation, I learned that a good teacher should know and understand all of the students. If we know and understand the students we can easily get close to the students. If we close to the students we can know their learning problem. So, we can teach them more effective because we know the main problem of our students.
b.      Widi Astuti
After the observation, I found that as a teacher we have to check our students when they do their work. When they do their work they might find some difficulties. If we walking around and check our students one by one we can help them to solve their difficulties individually.
c.       Regina Ari Septiningrum
After the observation, I think I must learn from Mrs. Novi. She is brave enough to admonish the students who talk with their friends and give question for them. Because of that thing, the students must ready to answer the question pay attention to the teacher.
d.      L. Desy Nakaryaswari
After the observation, I learn how to involve the students in the learning process actively. So the students can understand and easy to remember the material.
e.       Bernadeta Cahya Ambar Murniwati
After the observation, I inspired by Mrs. Novi. She ask the students who their work faster than the other to teaches their friends who didn’t finish their work yet. So their friends can finish their work faster.
f.       Nurmitasari
After the observation, I hope can be a teacher like Mrs. Novi. She always answer every questions that her students asked. And she make math as an interesting subject.

3.      Advice for the learning process or design ideaa for learning activity.

We think that the class that we observed have a great learning process. The students were enthusiastic to follow the learning process in the class. But there are some things that will be better if  teacher change it. The method of learning activity will be better if the teacher give the students more time to participate in the learning process. the speech method should be decrease.  The materials can be easier to absorb by the students if the teacher use the thing that close to students’ lifes. For the example: teacher can asked the students to measure the circumference the window, the table, the blackboard, etc.
